Protecting Our Children on the Internet

Look both ways before you cross the street, buckle up for safety, wash your hands before you eat. These are some of the many safety rules we instill in our children at a young age. But, how do we protect our children in an always-connected digital society?

The internet has become a necessary tool in our world. Yet, this valuable resource harbors a dark side. In an effort to build internet safety awareness, NDES has collaborated with Internet Safety Expert, Jesse Weinberger. She is the author of The Boogeyman Exists: And He’s In Your Child’s Back Pocket, a guide for parents and educators to keep children safe in a 24-7 always-connected digital society. She also has been teaching parents, students and working with schools to navigate online risks since 2003.

“I just can’t stress enough the importance of Internet safety. Technology is a wonderful resource, but can also be very dangerous for our children if not used appropriately. The key is education and of course parental involvement,” states Principal, Barbara Doering.

On Monday, September 18th, Jesse Weinberger presented an age-appropriate workshop to students in grades 4-8 by grade level. The very next week, NDES parents attended the second part of the series, with Jesse Weinberger, Internet Safety Seminar for Parents. This valuable seminar was made available to parents through the generosity of Todd and Susan Petersen, Petersen & Petersen, John and Kelly Boland, The Colin Boland Memorial Foundation, and Todd and Emily Barnhart. We thank them for their kindness and support.

During this informative presentation, Jesse shared information on internet dangers, reviewed actual data gathered from the presentation with NDES students and provided practical and preventative measures to ensure the safety of all children.
