Jr. High Electives - 2nd Semester

We are very excited to offer a variety of electives for our junior high students for the 2nd semester! We appreciate the teacher and student feedback and you will notice some additional offerings.

Sign-ups will be available after 8:00am on Saturday, January 13 through Wednesday, January 17.

Sign-up Guidelines

Students are to sign up for one elective for each day. Students are not permitted to sign up for the same elective as they did last semester. The only exceptions are Choir (a year long elective) and Challenge (only students who qualify for the Challenge program may choose this). Challenge will not be offered other than as an elective. 

3-D Animation (Thursdays)

Students will be creating their own stop motion animation.  We will be using apps on the iPads to film and record sound. Students will develop their own characters and story line then upload their videos to you tube so their films can be shared. 

Book Club (Wednesdays & Thursdays)

Students will start with Tangerine by Edward Bloor- a realist fiction book about soccer, football, and handicaps, written in diary form. Additional book choices will be made according to student interest. An exciting new component of Book Club is that students will branch out in order to spread “they joy of reading!” Book Club participants will visit primary classrooms to read to and/or listen to young emerging readers.

Challenge (Gr. 8 Wednesdays & Gr. 7 Thursdays)

In this course, students will participate in a variety of lessons that enhance problem solving, creativity, and teamwork skills. This course is for students who have already qualified for the NDES Challenge program.

Choir (Thursdays)

The Choir elective is open to any student interested in singing and improving vocal technique and confidence.  Students will learn sight singing and harmony and perform at school programs (Christmas and Spring) and enhance liturgies and masses.  Choir is a year-long elective. New choir students welcome for 2nd semester!

Computer Science Discoveries (Thursdays)

This is a fun introductory course in computer science that takes a broader look at CS by covering topics such as programming, physical computing, HTML/CSS, and data. Students will create authentic artifacts and engage with CS as a medium for creativity, communication, and problem solving. Whether they develop their own website, design an app, build a game, or create a physical computing device, students are empowered to bring their ideas to life.

Culinary Arts (Wednesdays & Thursdays)

A hands-on culinary cooking and baking curriculum for young people. This class will introduce students to the pleasure of preparing and enjoying delicious “real food” that they prepare! Students will learn basic cooking and baking skills, the joy of eating and cooking with all kinds of food! (Additional $35 supply fee for this course).

Handbells (Wednesdays)

Are you interested in making music? Do you like to work with others? Playing handbells will give you an experience of playing a musical instrument one, two, or more bells at a time while working with others. If you have some experience reading music, it will be helpful but is not necessary. All you need is a willingness to learn along with the ability to accept mistakes and to keep trying until together we succeed. Students who have played previously as well as beginners are welcome.

Journey with Jesus (Wednesdays & Thursdays)

Join Deacon Vince in exploring your Catholic faith in a retreat-like setting. If you are interested in becoming closer with Jesus and deepening your relationship with Him, you won’t want to miss this opportunity! This will be a safe and open environment to share personal testimonies, delve into scripture, listen to peers and reflect on your faith journey as you develop a deeper sense of Jesus in your life.

Life Skills with Finance (Thursdays)

This course will help students make informed decisions to help plan their financial futures. It’s never too early to set goals to become informed consumers, smart shoppers and wise savers and investors. Budgeting and saving is the key to financial success.

Lifetime Sports, Fitness and Wellness for Girls (Thursdays)

Class will focus on lifetime sports, fitness and wellness geared toward mind, body, and spirit.

Movie Soundtracks (Wednesdays)

The Movie Soundtracks elective will focus on composers including John Williams, Michael Kamon, James Horner and Hans Zimmer among others.  This course will highlight memorable movie scores, both current and past and explore the importance and use of music in the movies.

Physical Education for Boys (Wednesdays)

This course provides students with the opportunity to learn, and participate in, a variety of sports. It is designed to give students experience in the skills needed to be successful in both sporting events and the classroom. Emphasis is placed on active participation, personal improvement and positive social interaction during fitness and sporting activities.

Photography (Wednesdays)

Students will explore various styles of digital photography -  portrait photography, landscape, still life and much more. Students will play with both color and black and white photography.  Students will use their tablets to edit, add filters and store photos onto an online site.

Photoshop CC 2017 (Wednesdays)

This course is an introductory course designed to teach the coolest yet complex graphic an image editing program to students. They will learn how to edit and manipulate images, easily navigate the Photoshop interface, crop and resize, work with layers, paint using many tools, add text, use gradients, use filters and just so much more. Students will enjoy creating a graffiti wall, animated GIFs, a self-portrait, a film poster and a photo restoration.

Rock Band (Thursdays)

Calling all guitarists, bassists, drummers and singers! This course is for those musicians who would like to play alongside other musicians in a rock band format. Each musician will be grouped into bands with other musicians according to what they play. Those bands will then write, record and perform their original songs. Some basic instrument experience necessary.

Speech and Debate (Wednesdays)

This course will develop and improve public speaking and debate styles. From research, writing, editing, and delivering a speech to an audience, this course will help you gain the knowledge and confidence needed to execute a speech and participate in a debate in a non-threatening, supportive environment

STEMBoys: LEGO Mindstorm Robotics (Thursdays)

Working in pairs, students will design, construct and program unique sensor driven LEGO robots to take on the Hydrodynamics Robot Game Table challenges.  LEGO designer and Mindstorm EV3 software will be implemented.

STEMGirls: LEGO Mindstorm Robotics (Wednesdays)

Working in pairs, students will design, construct and program unique sensor driven LEGO robots to take on the Hydrodynamics Robot Game Table challenges.  LEGO designer and Mindstorm EV3 software will be implemented.

Survival Skills (Wednesdays)

In this class students will learn self-defense, be certified in CPR and AED, learn how to sew and create a stuffed animal/pillow. In addition, students will learn the basics of nutrition, managing money and many more skills needed in everyday life.
