Jr. High Electives
NDES offers electives to jr. high students! In addition to their regular courses, students in grade 7-8 will have the opportunity to sign up for two courses per semester according to their interest. All electives are semester-long so students will have the opportunity to sign up for different electives again for the 2nd semester. Below is a list of courses:
Book Club: Students will select a book at the first meeting from among some exciting choices! Suggestions include Tangerine by Edward Bloor- a realist fiction book about soccer, football, and handicaps, written in diary form; The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum- the classic novel of the “real” (not Hollywood) Wizard of Oz; When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead- Newbery Medal science fiction mystery novel which includes time travel, independence, and friendship; and The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson- (first book in a series) combines science fiction, coming of age, with romantic, ethical, and moral issues making it a important read.
For added discussion, we will read together the non-fiction book: The Radium Girls: the Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore. This book describes the lives, hardships and deaths of the many women who worked in the radium-dial companies when radium was coined a “wonder” substance. 
Challenge: In this course, the students will participate in a variety of experiences that enhance problem solving, creativity and teamwork skills. This course is for students who have already qualified for the NDES Challenge Program. (7th grade Challenge and 8th grade Challenge will be offered separately).
Choir: The Choir elective is open to any student interested in singing and improving vocal technique and confidence. Students will learn sight singing and harmony and will have the opportunity to perform at school programs (Christmas and Spring), special events and enhance liturgies. Choir is a year-long elective.
Computer Science Discoveries: This is a fun introductory course that takes a broader look at computer science by covering topics such as programming, physical computing, HTML/CSS and data. Students will create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication and problem solving. Whether they develop their own website, design an app, build a game or create a physical computing device, students will be empowered to bring their ideas to life. 
Creative Writing: Get your creative juices flowing! In this class, students will explore different writing genres. Through reading, brainstorming, collaboration and a variety of activities, students will have the opportunity to enhance their writing skills. Look out J.K. Rowling!
Culinary Arts: A hands-on culinary cooking and baking curriculum for young people. This class will introduce students to the pleasure of preparing and enjoying delicious “real food” that they prepare! Students will learn basic cooking and baking skills, the joy of eating and cooking with all kinds of food! (Additional $35 supply fee for this course).
Hiking and Outdoor Fitness for Boys: This course will provide students with the opportunity to get outside, learn more about nature and practice healthy exercising through hiking and trail jogging. These activities promote muscle strengthening, endurance, cardiovascular fitness and power. While hiking, students will learn about nature and the environment.
Illustration: Students will be designing and creating their own children's book in this class. They will look at famous illustrators to show variation in styles and mediums. The theme will be based off a song, so students can look at the books: One Love (Bob Marley), It's a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong, Forever Young (Bob Dylan) and many more for inspiration.
Learn to Crochet: Come and experience a craft that has been evolving since the 1500’s. It is still alive and well today. Crochet is the art of using a hook to pull loops through each other to create numerous items. You will learn about hooks, yarns, how to follow directions and how to take care of your finished piece. Come and learn to impress your friends! (Supplies will be provided). 
Lifetime Sports, Fitness and Wellness for Girls: This course provides students with the opportunity to learn and participate in a variety of sports, fitness opportunities. The focus will be on wellness: mind, body, and soul. 
Life Skills with Finance: This course will help students make informed decisions to help plan their financial futures. It’s never too early to set goals to become informed consumers, smart shoppers and wise savers and investors. Budgeting and saving is the key to financial success.
Movie Soundtracks: The Movie Soundtracks elective will focus on composers including John Williams, Michael Kamon, James Horner and Hans Zimmer among others. This course will highlight memorable movie scores, both current and past and explore the importance and use of music in the movies.

Painting: This class will cover many different styles of paintings from realistic to abstract. Students will be able to create paintings using all types of paint mediums from watercolor, tempera, acrylic and encaustic (wax painting).
Photoshop CC 2017: This course is an introductory course designed to teach the coolest yet complex, graphic, an image editing program to students. They will learn how to edit and manipulate images, easily navigate the Photoshop interface, crop and resize, work with layers, paint using many tools, add text, use gradients, use filters and just so much more. Students will enjoy creating a graffiti wall, animated GIFs, a self-portrait, a film poster and a photo restoration.
Physical Education for Boys: This course will provide students with the opportunity to learn and participate in a variety of sports. It is designed to give students experience and the skills needed to be successful in both sporting events and daily life. Emphasis will be placed on active participation, personal improvement and positive social interaction during fitness and sporting activities.

STEMGirls!: STEM in Medicine
~ From GMOs to robotic arms, we will investigate the fields of biotechnology and biomedical engineering with challenges and labs that introduce how technology is changing the field of medicine.

STEMBoys!: Block Programming
~ Create a video game in Scratch and learn simple robotics using LEGO mindstorms! Students will work with block programming applications to better understand computation thinking and the process of making technology do what you want it to do!

SAT/ACT Prep: Students will have the opportunity to develop test-taking strategies for both the SAT and ACT, take practice tests, and learn how to approach questions, all in a fun and interactive way.
Yoga and Wellness for Girls: Enjoy the benefits yoga and fitness! Areas of focus will be on low impact activities to improve overall flexibility, strength, core and cardiovascular endurance. Reduction of stress and increased ability to focus is an added benefit. (Yoga mat required.)
